The Zayed International Charity Marathon got underway yesterday in New York City to raise fund for the Healthy Kidney Foundation.

Held under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the marathon was launched in the presence of Sheikih Zayed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Dr. Jamal Sanad Al Suwaidi, Director General of Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, members of diplomatic missions, artists, cultural personalities, athletes and tens of thousands of runners from the USA and abroad Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan said the sports event reflects the humanitarian works the UAE is undertaking under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and support of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed in funding research centres specialising in treatment of children suffering from kidney diseases.

"The marathon is growing in size and stature year after year thanks to the UAE leadership's support for humanitarian initiatives," he added. For his part, Dr. Al Suwaidi lauded the marathon as a significant humanitarian value added to the UAE's bright world record of charitable and humanitarian works. He said the charity event was launched in 2005 as part of UAE's efforts to provide health and psychological care to children infected with kidney diseases.

He hoped the marathon would evolve into an international humanitarian culture that delivers the message of love, sacrifice, justice, right and respect for human rights, especially children, regardless to race, colour, religion, ethnic and nationality. The event was supervised by UAE Embassy in Washington and hosted by the non-profit New York Road Runners Foundation (NYRR) one of New York City's leading not-for-profit providers of physical education.
