- 10 April 2019
In a new achievement for the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), the Center’s UAE Federation Library has received the Best Annual Program Award, during the ninth meeting of the Arabic Union Catalog (AUC). Organized by the King Abdul Aziz Public Library, in cooperation with the National Library of Tunisia and Public Reading department, and under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Zine El Abidine, Minister of Cultural Affairs, Tunisia, the awards took place from April 2-4, 2019. This year’s theme was ‘Efficiency of Knowledge Management for Sustainable Development’.
The UAE Federation Library received the Best Annual Program Award for its systematic and ongoing program to enhance the role of the library – specifically its knowledge services for the public.
His Excellency Prof. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research, expressed his pride at the UAE Federation Library winning the award, as a good result of the Center’s activities in the fields of science, knowledge, culture and excellence over the years.
The UAE Federation Library is considered one of the most important libraries in the region, and the world. An outstanding specialized library, it provides services to researchers and intellectuals in political science, military, social and economic fields. The Library has more than 1,700,000 hard copy and electronic resources, including 399,000 hard copy books, 1,000 atlases and maps, around 800 university papers and almost 1,700 periodicals. It houses historic British documents, encyclopedias and international reports, as well as a collection of old and rare books within its Special Collection. The Library also stands out for its special logistics structure, for electronic and hard copy files, which enables specialists to access sources and references in multiple formats.
The award adds another accolade to a record already filled with great achievements. In March, the Library received the UAE Federal Personality Award 2019 from His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces (may God protect him). This prestigious award recognized the Library’s achievements and pioneering efforts in the service of society, as well as the significant role it plays in intellectual production.
Commenting further on the award, His Excellency Prof. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi added that The Best Annual Program Award emphasizes the Library’s excellence in providing science and knowledge in a fast, efficient and professional way, with high standards that provide the basis for projects of added and sustainable value. It also reinforces the firm conviction that any success and innovation must maximize cultural and cognitive impact, as part of a flexible and efficient system of participation.
The Arabic Union Catalog is a collaborative project to provide knowledge services through a common platform, bringing together knowledge and culture institutions in the Arab world. Its vision is to develop the infrastructure for services, as well as practices and standards in Arab knowledge, and to respond to the challenges of these collaborative efforts by building a database that meets global standards.
The Arabic Union Catalog holds annual meetings during which officials, practitioners and academics study developments in information systems, digitization and e-services. There is a particular focus on the challenges facing libraries and knowledge institutions, as they strive to provide advanced information services. The meetings also consider how best to activate knowledge in Arab societies, as part of the shift toward sustainable development.
