Well-Established Emirati Positions
- 13 September 2014
It is widely known that the UAE’s foreign policy since its establishment, toward the region and the world, has been governed by stable and well established principles based on non-interference in internal affairs of other countries. It has been characterized by support for peace, stability and development for its Arab brethren in the international arena for the sake of their stability, coexistence and development in Arab countries.
These principles have existed since the days of Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul), and have reflected on the country’s policies, regionally and internationally. This has further strengthened during the reign of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), which is evident in the UAE’s response to the changes that have taken place in the Arab world since the end of 2010.
The country has always demonstrated commitment toward supporting stability and unity of the brotherly Arab countries and safeguarding against any threat to their security or against any interference in their affairs. The UAE has made a conscious effort to stand by all efforts made to fortify the Arab world in the wake of the attempts to create unrest or to plant the seeds of conflict and chaos in the region.
The visit of a high-level Libyan delegation to the UAE, headed by Speaker of House of Representatives, and accompanied by the Libyan Prime Minister, was an important occasion to reaffirm the UAE’s consistent position on the ongoing developments in some Arab countries, including Libya. The underlining principle has been to stand by the Libyan government and its people to rebuild and strengthen the country and support the role of its national institutions for the sake of security, stability and decent living for the Libyan people.
This was reiterated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, during his meeting with the Libyan delegation. Receiving the Libyan delegation, His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, stressed the importance of respecting the will of the Libyan people in determining their future and addressing their national issues.
The UAE’s position on Libya, as stated by its wise leadership, has been the same as toward many other Arab countries experiencing similar changes in recent years. The country’s stand has been appreciated by people and governments of those countries as it has worked, and will continue to work, to ensure that the Arab people demonstrate unity and stability and stay away from ethnic, religious, or sectarian divides. This is critical as some extremist elements are trying to create disorder to drain the region’s resources, and undermine its potential.
