Unstinted Support of UAE for Palestinians

  • 3 August 2009

The recent Dh165 million aid provided by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development to the Palestinian Authority for completion of development projects in Palestinian Territories underscores UAE’s continuing support to the Palestinians, and comes in the purview of its humanitarian support for the latter that is just one of the various other ways in which UAE has been supportive of the Palestinian people. Perhaps, the best point of the UAE’s support for Palestinians is that it has been constant; and that the UAE has played an actively helpful role in alleviating all the humanitarian crises faced by the Palestinian people, be it on issues related to health, social projects, rehabilitation and major reconstruction in cities of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. These contributions have been valued at more than three billion dollars over the past decades. The UAE’s support for the Palestinian people was in evidence during the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip last January. The amount of aid provided by various governmental bodies at this critical time has been estimated at worth $174 million, in addition to the services provided by the UAE Red Crescent, which included financial and material assistance to the victims of Israeli aggression.

The UAE has also been providing political support and has been campaigning for the restoration of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and the establishment of their own independent state, in accordance with the permanent principles approved of international legitimacy, particularly those in accordance with Resolutions 242 and 338 and the “Arab Peace Initiative.”

One of the examples of the UAE’s commitment is its continued support for reconciliation among Palestinians, and its repeated call to various Palestinian factions on various occasions on the need to work toward uniting and consolidating their positions. This stems from the UAE’s conviction that any Palestinian dispute or discord between various forces could lead to destabilizing the national project and add more suffering to the Palestinian people. The UAE also supports regional and international efforts for resumption of Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations, including the final solution negotiations. The statement of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, during the reception of George Mitchell, US envoy to the Middle East few days ago, stressed on the necessity to push both Palestinian and Israeli sides toward the path of peaceful negotiations, and work seriously at the regional and international level, toward finding a peaceful solution and a permanent comprehensive basis for the resolutions of international legitimacy and the "Arab Peace Initiative”.

The Palestinian cause has always been one of the most prominent foreign policy platforms for the UAE, which also represents the cornerstone for its orientation toward finding a formula for activating a joint Arab mechanism. The state has expressed, on more than one occasion, its belief in the importance of supporting the struggle of the Palestinian people to restore their legitimate rights, and has considered the question of Palestine as crucial to solving the Middle East problem, and believes that the Arab-Israeli conflict could not be settled without being preceded by or accompanied by a comprehensive settlement of the issue of Palestine.

The UAE has enshrined these principles through regional and international alliances, and has responded effectively with the various initiatives and the constructive efforts that protect the rights of the Palestinian people, has successfully invested its strong international and distinguished relationships to push the forces of the world to work toward moving the peace process.
