UAE’s Supportive Vision for region's Security and Stability

  • 13 October 2015

The UAE’s comprehensive and balanced vision towards issues related to security spring from its belief that its security and stability are inseparable from that of the Arab region. The country is always keen to assert the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab countries in the face of designs to influence their cohesion. It also gets actively involved in any effort aimed at tackling the challenges and threats facing these countries. The talks held by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces (may God protect him), with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russian city of Sochi, on Sunday, demonstrate the fundamentals of the UAE’s position.

His Highness put forward a wise and balanced vision to resolve the Syrian crisis, stressing on two important points – the international responsibility to end the crisis, which has claimed lives of hundreds of thousands of Syrians, and displaced millions of innocent people besides causing loss of years of human and economic development. Secondly, the UAE does not spare any effort in backing political solutions to ensure Syria’s security, stability, and territorial integrity. This shows that the UAE recognizes the dangerous consequences of the crisis continuing in Syria and the need for the international community to find a solution. It believes that perpetuity exacerbates the suffering of Syrian people and increases flow of refugees to neighboring countries.

The most dangerous aspect is that the continuation of this crisis provide conducive atmosphere for extremist and terrorist elements to threaten the security and stability of the entire region. These extremist organizations seek to exploit regional conflicts to strengthen their influence within these countries, threatening their sovereignty and territorial integrity. They even exploit these crises to promote their radical and ideological rhetoric. The continuation of the Syrian crisis would also have a high economic cost and lead to loss of years of development, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said. Syria needs a lot of time, resources and efforts for reconstruction, development and reconstruction in the future, which underlines the importance of the international community to bear its responsibilities in this regard.

The UAE has warned that if the Syrian crisis is allowed to continue further it will have major consequences at security, humanitarian and development levels. It has emphasized the need to support the Syrian people and to alleviate their suffering by providing humanitarian relief to refugees in neighboring countries or within the country. The UAE’s participation in the Arab coalition to restore legitimacy, security, stability, sovereignty, unity, and Arab identity of Yemen is consistent with its vision of extending support for the sake of security and stability in the whole region. This is more so considering the increasing importance of Yemen to strategic security of the Gulf, the Middle East and the rest of the world.

While the UAE continues to participate in the Arab coalition, to liberate the remaining Yemeni areas from the control of rebels and their allies, it supports the efforts made by the international community to restore the political process. This should be based on agreed parameters, mainly the Gulf initiative and compliance with UN Security Council Resolution No. 2216, and humanitarian efforts to meet the needs of the people of Yemen. This balanced vision on the issues facing the region reflects the UAE’s sense of responsibility towards maintaining Gulf and Arab security and is consistent with the firm belief that unity of Arab countries is key to the security, stability and development for all countries in the region.
