UAE Supports the Will of the Egyptian People

  • 20 January 2014

The UAE has always upheld the choices made by the Arab people and has supported the popular view at all levels, as it firmly believes that people are the source of legitimacy and power. This was clearly enunciated by UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, when he stated that the massive turnout at the Egyptian referendum and sweeping support for the new constitution demonstrate the Egyptian people’s will and support for the social contract between people and the state. His Highness said that he was confident that this step would promote stability in Egypt and belief in its future. It will strengthen Egypt’s regional and international position as well as help achieve stability, development and prosperity for the Egyptian people.

The constitutional amendments passed by 98 percent of Egyptian voters are ushering in a new and dynamic phase, not only as the constitution is the first step toward drawing a roadmap for the future, but as it reflects public support for the interim government and satisfaction with government policies. It also highlights values of moderation cherished by the Egyptian people and their rejection of radical ideologies espoused by some groups to stall the referendum. The mandate shows the dwindling support for these radical groups.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan affirmed that this step would bring the desired stability and development to Egypt and serve as a crucial step for subsequent presidential and parliamentary elections in the months ahead. These would lay foundations for a civil state where democracy and human rights are appropriately upheld.

The UAE under the wise leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God bless him) has made every effort to extend support to Egypt so that it overcomes hardships and regains its rightful position among the comity of nations. This is evident from the series of initiatives taken by the UAE in recent months, which began with its support for the Egyptian roadmap. A high-level UAE delegation visited Cairo to underscore political support for Egypt. A substantial financial assistance was also provided by the UAE, which demonstrated its readiness to fund a number of infrastructure projects in order to improve living conditions.

This extensive support for Egypt is part of the UAE’s approach to bolster stability and development in Arab nations and offer every help possible for achieving this goal. The UAE believes that stable Arab nations ensure security and stability for the whole region.
