UAE Leadership in Support of Values of Tolerance and Dialog
- 8 October 2013
The UAE has not only been a pioneer in regional and international development but also in promoting constructive values in international relations that help promote stability and tackle major and complex global challenges. This was highlighted in the statement made by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. At a Cabinet meeting held recently, His Highness expressed deepest appreciation of the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), who has transformed the UAE into becoming a key player that promotes peace, dialog and tolerance with various countries of the world.
The cornerstone of the UAE’s policies has been to spread positive values. The country looks at differences in outlook between various parties as a starting point for cooperation and integration rather than infighting and strife. As a consequence, it has successfully built an inspiring model at the regional and international levels. It is due to these factors that the UAE is now seen as an example of openness, tolerance and moderation in its domestic and foreign policies and has earned international recognition and appreciation.
The UAE plays an active role in all global efforts to promote inter-faith and inter-cultural dialog and sees this as an essential element of development. The country has expressed this view at regional and international platforms and its active diplomacy plays an important role in highlighting these views. UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s speech at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly is a case in point. His Highness said that comprehensive human development needs atmosphere of tolerance and moderation and that it is essential to support dialog without one culture claiming superiority over others.
Pursuing its role in serving the UAE policy and the wise leadership’s vision, the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) highlights moderation and tolerance, which is manifest in its activities. This is exemplified in the two events organized by the ECSSR this year: the conference titled The Future of Arab-Islamic Culture of Moderation in May and the Center’s Ramadan cultural activities, which focused on Moderation and Political Islam. Distinguished experts attended these events. These activities were part of the ECSSR’s ongoing efforts to develop an information and intellectual base covering the various aspects related to moderation and dialog and promoting the Center’s relations with Arab research centers. ECSSR firmly believes that fighting fanaticism, bigotry and extremism requires comprehensive efforts by various agencies including state-run organizations, research centers and think-tanks.
