UAE Diplomacy in Support of Development

  • 4 May 2014

One of the main objectives of UAE diplomacy is to affirm the position of the state in the regional and international arenas, safeguarding its strategic interests and supporting sustainable and inclusive national policies. In this context, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Foreign Minister, has visited Uruguay, Peru, Paraguay and the Bahamas, with the aim of promoting the UAE’s openness to Latin America—an area of increasing global importance owing to its many development success stories, which can provide lessons for the national economy. It also presents a number of promising opportunities for investment and economic partnership in a variety of sectors.

The importance of this visit is highlighted by the fact that it comes just days after the visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai (may Allah protect him) to Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Chile. This approach clearly reflects the great importance that the UAE places on strengthening relations with the countries of the region.

Development has become an important element of UAE diplomacy. The foreign policy adopted by the state – based on mutual respect and openness to all countries of the world, as well as developing an appreciation of different economic models and experiments occurring worldwide – has become a strong source of support for the UAE’s own national economy and development.

This is affirmed by the recent tour of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The talks held during this string of visits featured strong economic dimensions, and discussed how the UAE might strengthen its ties with these countries in the areas of investment, tourism and renewable energy, identifying promising opportunities for further economic engagement. At the same time, the officials of these countries sought to strengthen their relations and cooperation with the UAE and to benefit from its successful economic and development experiences.

The UAE’s policy of openness to successful development experiments in different parts of the world in recent years has assisted the state in refining its economic approaches toward a variety of regional and international issues.

UAE diplomacy has also enabled the protection of its foreign investments and removed various barriers to their future development, thanks to its success in establishing an extensive network of excellent relations with different countries, and as a result of its efforts to promote global confidence in the UAE’s economic capabilities. This confidence is exemplified by impressive international indicators of competitiveness and growth, as well as the UAE’s successful bid to host World Expo 2020.
