Towards More Prosperous Future of the UAE-Morocco Relations

  • 22 October 2015

Since the days of Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul) the UAE has been keen to strengthen friendship and promote balanced relations based on mutual respect with Arab and friendly countries around the world. Today the UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), is committed to the same approach. This keeps the UAE’s flag flying at regional and international arenas as one of the leading countries following a balanced foreign policy that supports aspirations of people around the globe and stands for global peace.

The UAE–Morocco relations have followed a unique model of brotherhood and mutual respect, collaboration and synergy on the path of virtue, which can be followed in developing bilateral relations. This was reiterated by the UAE’s Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during his meeting recently with his Moroccan counterpart Salaheddine Mezouar, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in the Moroccan city of Fes. He called the UAE-Morocco relations as constructive.

The UAE has always been keen to prepare the ground for better relations with Morocco, based on mutual understanding and interests. The talks held between His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in Morocco furthered this approach. The joint communiqué issued after the talks said that the two countries reiterated their commitment to strengthen relations to reach the level of strategic partnership and also highlighted their keenness to coordinate between various actors to enhance these relations. This is being done under the directives of leadership of the two countries to fulfill mutual interests for the sake of people who have been connected throughout history.

The talks underline the strength of the relations between the two countries, thanks to the spirit of brotherhood, and determination to consolidate bilateral cooperation. This is in addition to the consensus on both sides on the most important regional and international issues. The UAE and Morocco cooperate and support regional and international efforts to ensure security and stability in the Arab region. They consolidate the values of peace, tolerance and co-existence in emerging countries as well as contributing effectively in countering ideological extremism and terrorism in all its forms.

The unique relations between the UAE and Morocco are based on the aspirations to promote strategic partnership in political, economic and cultural fields to enhance development and cultural progress in both the countries. Economic and development relations between the two sides have already witnessed remarkable progress in recent years, reflected in signing of an MoU between the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, in June 2013, on a grant committed by the UAE.

The UAE’s contribution to this initiative amounts to $1.25 billion and is meant to finance development projects in the Kingdom. The UAE was the first among Arab countries to invest in Morocco since the establishment of the UAE-Morocco Joint Commission in 1985 in Rabat. There is no doubt that the UAE’s keenness to consolidate the bonds of brotherhood and close cooperation with Morocco and other Arab countries stem from the belief that the convergence and coordination between Arab countries is the ideal approach for building a better future for our people.
