Time is Witness to the UAE’s Historical Claim

  • 2 October 2013

The UAE’s Foreign Minister, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlighted the country’s balanced and consistent foreign policy during his speech before the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The speech summed up the UAE’s approach toward Arab world, the region and the world in general since the days of Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul). This approach, His Highness reiterated, has been followed diligently by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him).

H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s speech touched upon a range of issues including the top priorities for the UAE’s foreign policy, especially its historical, demographic and legal sovereignty over the three islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Moussa, which Iran has occupied since the early 1970’s. He called upon international community to urge Iranians to respond to its frequent, sincere and peaceful calls for a just settlement of the issue either through bilateral talks or by taking the matter to the International Court of Justice so that the UAE’s sovereignty over these Islands is fully restored.

H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan reiterated that all developments and arrangements being pursued by the Iranian authorities over the occupied UAE islands are null and void, if not contradictory, to the basic principles of international law, conventions and humanitarian values. History has shown us that a country’s sovereignty over usurped land cannot be rescinded with the passage of time. On the contrary, if the rights are not honored by one generation, it continues to remain a problem for generations to come.

It is widely known that the UAE is a firm believer of the principles and objectives set by the UN Charter for maintaining international peace, security and co-existence and in cordially resolving international disputes. This includes respecting the rule of law, non-interference in internal affairs of other nations, creating favorable atmosphere for international relations based on tolerance, non-violence and respecting human rights. These values have successfully transformed the UAE’s economy and provide solid foundations for its foreign policy. They also help the UAE forge relationships with countries keen to promote peace and security.
