The UAE’s Steady Approach toward Tackling Terrorism

  • 6 October 2014

The UAE presents a development, cultural and social model based on openness to, and acceptance of, the other. It promotes tolerance, moderation and coexistence among civilizations, faiths and cultures. These values are opposed to everything that terrorists and their supporters espouse for, including racism, intolerance and violence. The UAE is always referred to as a model of struggle against the threat of terrorism in areas of security, culture and society, and as an important partner in the international community’s battle against terrorist groups, particularly the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Since its inception in 1971, the UAE has rejected extremism, violence and terrorism. It has emphasized this fact through its words and deeds and has been engaged in every Arab, regional and international effort to confront terrorism, addressing its evil designs and draining their intellectual and financial resources. The UAE’s leadership, headed by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), has spared no effort in calling for international cooperation in the war against extremism and terrorism. It has routinely urged for a comprehensive approach in this war and warned against any relaxation.

The speech delivered at the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly 2014, by UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, reiterated the UAE’s position against terrorism. The speech outlined a comprehensive vision confirming that terrorism is a threat to all countries around the world and hence there must be active global cooperation to face it by means of a comprehensive approach that does not focus on the security aspects alone. It reiterated that the battle against terrorism cannot be confined to Iraq and Syria and should extend to counter all terrorist organizations anywhere in the world.

The UAE’s successful model of development never stops it from looking at the future and remaining open to the whole world. It is totally opposed to the ideology of terrorism, which wants to makes countries and communities go backward and destroy security and stability. It feeds on conflict and wants to fuel clashes between civilizations and religions. The UAE’s wise leadership believes that terrorism is the greatest threat to progress and is not specific to any religion, race or geographical entity. It is a global threat that must be eradicated without linking it to any religion or culture. Such linkages help terrorists, increase their followers and hide their real objectives as they are not affiliated to any religion, civilization or culture.
