The UAE’s Message of Tolerance and Peace
- 24 February 2014
One of the main attributes of the UAE, under the wise leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), has been the focus of its foreign policy on the promotion of international peace, tolerance and moderation. The country seeks to translate this policy into initiatives that settle disputes through peaceful means and dialog and combats violent extremism and acts of terrorism that target innocent people. This fact was highlighted by UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan while talking about the ground-breaking ‘Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies’, which will be held in Abu Dhabi from March 9-10. His Highness noted that the UAE has always promoted tolerance, love and peace as basic tenets of Islam, which is a faith that teaches moderation, shuns violence and seeks peaceful coexistence among communities.
The Forum will bring together over 250 of the world’s most influential Islamic scholars and academics. It will provide an opportunity for the discussion of critical issues related to sectarianism and ideological differences in Muslim societies that are leading to violence. This is an important initiative that aims to tackle an issue that threatens regional and global peace, security and stability. Extremism and radicalism not only stigmatizes others and labels them with infidelity but also legitimizes violence. The Forum will discuss the implications of this problem and look at the sectarian divide in some Muslim communities. It will also recommend ways to counter extremist ideologies. This is extremely important not only because terrorists present a distorted picture of Islam but also because it is detrimental to Muslim societies seeking comprehensive development.
The UAE has proved time and again that it is a responsible nation. It has been at the forefront of global efforts to tackle extremism and terrorism at economic, social, security and political levels. It has launched significant initiatives and helped build new approaches to tackle it. The Abu Dhabi Hedaya Center, which plays a leading role in this domain, is a case in point. It is the first international institution of its kind that has been established to fight violent extremism. It provides training, facilitates dialog, enhances cooperation and promotes research to combat all forms of radicalism. It also supports the Global Counterterrorism Forum, the United Nations and other international organizations. The UAE is keen to present the real Islam, in which principles and values of peace, tolerance and moderation are cherished. The UAE rejects radicalism which undermines security, stability and development and urges the international community to lay down strategies that end violence and consolidate global peace and security.
