The UAE’s Firm Position on Stability in Egypt

  • 18 August 2013

The UAE has fully backed the statement made by His Majesty, Custodian of the two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, on the ongoing events in Egypt. The country has underlined that this statement reflects King Abdullah’s interest in the security and stability of Egypt and that it comes at a pivotal moment that requires a serious and critical position in the face of foreign intervention in Egyptian affairs. The UAE emphasized that King Abdullah’s statement reflects the keenness of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to ensure stability in the region. It also shows his awareness and rational approach in overcoming the seditious plots being hatched against the region.

By extending support to this statement, the UAE has reiterated that it stands by Egypt and by its right to maintain security in this fight against extremism and violence, which is leading to a massive loss of life and property in Egypt. The UAE expressed its sincere wishes that Egypt will soon overcome these circumstances through the concerted efforts of its people and start playing its leading role in the Arab, regional and international arena.

The UAE realizes that supporting Egypt at this critical juncture is part of its historical commitment toward the Arab nation and it requires an Arab position to back the Egyptian government’s actions against terrorism and tackling issues that threaten its national security. This was also the position the UAE adopted at the beginning of recent events in Egypt, in which it maintained that it understands the measures taken by the Egyptian government against extremist groups who were determined to use the rhetoric of violence and incitement.

UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan reiterated the keenness of the UAE’s leadership and its people to stand completely behind Egypt during the current phase and to provide it with support as part of the strong relations that exist between the two countries. The UAE has already provided around $3 billion in financial support to Egypt in order to strengthen its economy so that it meets the challenges efficiently.

The UAE stresses that its relations with Egypt remain strong. Over the decades the two countries have taken common political positions rejecting violence as a means to resolve differences and in accordance with international principles. Therefore, the UAE’s support for Egypt is a commitment and a strategic necessity at the same time and is one of the most important fundamentals of the UAE’s foreign policy, which considers Egypt’s security and stability as part of the GCC security and stability.

This UAE’s position is significant because it realizes the importance of Egypt’s position at the Arab and regional levels. The UAE understands that Egypt should be supported if a message of Arab solidarity is to be sent to regional and international players especially on crucial issues. This must be done in a rational manner in the best interest of the region. This is also crucial for the welfare and progress of Egypt in particular, and Islam and Arab world in general at a time when some elements are determined to stoke the flames of violence.
