The UAE’s Distinct Role in the Service of Humanity

  • 21 April 2014

The UAE has made numerous contributions in the service of humanity and has provided assistance that changed people’s lives. The country has contributed toward improving health conditions, creating employment, fulfilling housing needs and in other areas of human development. The generous donation made by families of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to the sum of $2 million for the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, at the request of Washington-based Children’s National Medical Center, during the annual ceremony of the institute recently, is another example of its kind.

The institute was established in 2009 with the help of a generous grant by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for pediatric studies in the US and the world. From the period 2009 to 2013, the institute has provided treatment and microsurgeries to thousands of children from different parts of the world. The institute has also provided treatment to hundreds of UAE children and has opportunities for scientific research in pediatrics besides providing opportunities for training of UAE doctors and students. The institute combines treatment with research, study and training. Dr. Kurt Newman, President and CEO of Children’s National Medical Center said that the institute offers researchers and scientists an opportunity to learn and develop latest technologies in radiology, laparoscopic surgery and ultrasound therapy, and other developments that have been made possible by this organization in the service of humanity.

The Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation in Washington DC is one of the several examples of the UAE’s role – under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him) – in improving the condition of human being. As a result, the UAE’s name has come to be associated with charity and humanitarian efforts all over the world. The citizens of the UAE enjoy respect wherever they visit, whether for study, tourism or medical purposes and increase the UAE’s soft power. More importantly, the UAE has set a role model for other countries in the East and the West through its efforts in the service of humanity. The country encourages greater and more sincere efforts, more initiatives to build a mutually beneficial world that addresses global concerns and challenges.
