The UAE’s Consistent Position on Terrorism

  • 12 October 2015

On Sunday the UAE strongly condemned the twin terrorist bombings that targeted train station in the Turkish capital of Ankara, which resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the UAE reiterates its firm and principled stance denouncing all forms of terrorism, regardless of their motivation and justification, and irrespective of whosoever commits it. The statement called on the international community to intensify efforts to uproot terrorism, which is against all human and moral values.

This reflects the UAE’s firm position and foreign policy based on denouncing all manifestations of terrorism, committed, practiced, and encouraged by any. The UAE calls for effective global cooperation to eliminate its leading causes as one of the greatest threats to the security of societies, global stability, and relationship between people of various faiths, cultures, and civilizations. The UAE has expressed this position on various regional and international forums, the last of which was the speech delivered by Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.

His Highness underlined various dimensions of the UAE’s vision to counter extremism and terrorism. First dimension is warning about the spread of threat in the region and the world. He emphasized that this goes beyond our region and poses threat to other countries and societies. The UAE has always warned that radical elements are not confined to a particular country as can be seen in the escalation of terror attacks in many countries. Second, terrorists seek to undermine coexistence and dialog among people of various cultures at the international level, using religion as a pretext to defend the interest of one civilization against the other.

The UAE realizes that terrorism harms Islam and distorts its tolerant teachings. In his speech, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan strongly condemned acts of terrorism in the garb of religion to achieve political goals. He condemned the brutal methods adopted by such groups in the name of Islam, which doesn’t match with its tolerant principles of peaceful coexistence and acceptance of the other. The UAE stresses on the UAE’s solidarity with countries in the region in countering the threat and supporting their efforts to restore security and stability.

The UAE also highlights the importance of intellectual and cultural struggle against terrorism and extremism. His Highness explained the efforts made by the UAE in this regard, through coordination with Global Forum on Fighting Terrorism, or through the creation and hosting of international institutions. The outcome of this endeavor was the Al Hidaya Islamic Center, which assists international community on capacity building and exchanging best practices to counter all forms of extremism, the Muslim Council of Elders, and the Forum for the Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies.

The UAE is also keen to promote the culture of tolerance and peace and rapprochement between religions. This is in addition to the Sawab center, which is designed to refute the Da’esh propaganda through social networks. The rise of terrorism in the region confirms the position the UAE has held over the years. The country warned years ago of this threat and called for need to confront it as an integrated multilateral global strategy. Therefore its efforts and initiatives in this regard have won appreciation from many countries who seek to benefit from its experience in countering the threat of extremism and terrorism.
