The UAE’s Consistent Approach
- 23 June 2015
The visit by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to Al Bateen Majlis in Abu Dhabi on Sunday – and their meetings with the people of Al Bateen neighbourhood – represent one of the key features of the philosophy of governance in the United Arab Emirates. It demonstrates the close interaction and communication with citizens that help the leadership learn about their needs and understand their views related to issues of national importance. Such interactions have been part of the legacy of our forefathers and a tradition instilled in the Emirati society, which is characterized by harmony, coherence and collaboration.
The keenness of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to exchange greetings with the people on the advent of the holy month of Ramadan is an example of the UAE leadership’s approach of continuous engagement with the people. It was established by Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul), and has been maintained by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and Their Highnesses, Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates. The tradition comes alive during occasions of national and religious significance every year when the wise leadership receives citizens who come to greet them and express their feelings of love and appreciation. This is the outcome of the open door policy which characterizes the UAE.
The visit also shows the significance the UAE’s wise leadership attaches to Ramadan majalis not only because it is an important social and cultural tradition in the country but also because they have become ‘open parliaments’ where national issues are raised and discussed. Such discussions are published by the media for the benefit of citizens and officials at different levels. This explains why His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan were keen to highlight the objectives of Al Bateen Majlis, especially in relation to cooperation and consultation, strengthening bonds among people, maintaining traditions, and raising generations on the basis of moral principles.
Ramadan majalis are organized all over emirates and are attended by Their Highnesses, Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates, Crown Prince and Deputy Rulers, who listen to discussions. This in essence is the philosophy of good governance which distinguishes the UAE and highlights its leadership’s role in continuously communicating with citizens to understand their needs and aspirations so that they respond to them. This is why the UAE has become a unique model of governance, which many countries seek to emulate. This model is based on mutual appreciation of the leadership and the people and it ensures all elements of stability, security and development.
