  • 28 September 2014

The UAE has participated in several major international meetings in recent times. Among these are the NATO Summit in Wales, International Conference on Peace and Security in Iraq in Paris; United Nations Security Council Ministerial Meeting besides consultative and bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly taking place in New York. The UAE was also part of the 2014 Climate Change Summit and UN Security Council Summit on foreign terrorist fighters, which was headed by President Barack Obama recently.

There are two significant reasons behind the UAE’s decision to participate in such a large number of major international events. First, it reflects the level of distinguished relations that links the UAE with the outside world and its growing influence in international relations. Second, the UAE’ diplomacy enjoys several advantages. It is an active, effective and ambitious diplomacy and has immense desire to take advantage of the privileged position the country occupies at the global stage. It is keen to build relations, to achieve greater ambitions and advance rapidly to be rated among the best in the world.

The gains made by the UAE’s foreign policy in recent decades have been due to the foundations laid down by Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul), which has been furthered by the country’s wise leadership under the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him). The fundamental principles on which the policy is built includes mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs of other countries, settling disputes through peaceful means, avoiding entering into harmful alliances, promoting peace, stability and security at regional and international arenas, as well as paying attention to the human dimension.

Due to these fundamental principles, the UAE’s foreign policy is characterized by a high degree of balance, prudence and flexibility, and has won the trust of the international community. It has also earned the country significant weight in international relations and in the corridors of major organizations. The fundamental principles of the UAE’s foreign policy have influenced the positions it has taken on recent events that threaten global security and stability, especially terrorism. The country has adopted a clear position in this regard and has announced its readiness to provide all kinds of support to regional and international efforts to fight the scourge of terrorism.

The UAE’s condemnation of ISIS, and its practices in Iraq and the region, shows values of tolerance the country believes in, rejecting all forms of violence and extremism. The UAE’s continued participation in international meets shows its openness to the outside world and desire to boost cooperation for the sake of humanity. The UAE’s position during the UN Security Council Summit speaks for itself. It called on the international community for a unified strategy to end the recruitment of foreign fighters as it is one of the most dangerous forms of terrorism, which threatens global peace and security.
