The UAE, under H.H. Sheikh Khalifa, Stands for Dialog and Peaceful Resolution of Conflicts
- 27 March 2014
The statement of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, who lead the UAE delegation during the Nuclear Security Summit 2014 in The Hague, summarizes the UAE foreign policy’s moderate approach under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him). This is the result of the firm foundation laid down by Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul), who outlined principles of the UAE’s foreign policy, which guarantees respect for all international covenants and laws and establishing relations with countries around the world based on mutual respect, non-interference, commitment to resolving disputes through dialog, standing for rights and justice, and contributing to international peace and stability.
These principles were outlined in the statement made by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the Nuclear Security Summit. There are several salient features of his statement. First, the UAE’s wise leadership is of a firm belief that dialog is the best way to resolve any global conflict. His Highness emphasized that the UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has adopted the strategy of cooperation, understanding and dialog among nations and resolving conflict through peaceful means. The country supports all efforts made for the sake of development of people. The UAE is fully aware of the threats to stability and security in the world, with terrorism being at the forefront. His Highness reiterated that terrorism in general, and nuclear terrorism in particular, is the most important challenge facing the world today and that a diligent and collective action is required to ward off all forms of this threat.
The UAE is fully aware of the risk nuclear proliferation poses to global security and has a clear vision on stamping out this danger. His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasized that urgent formulation of a common approach and collective will is required to tackle the threat of nuclear terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), which can impact security and stability of countries and safety of their people. He stressed that international cooperation in nuclear security is currently a top international priority and that the challenge is growing. Sharing of experiences and contribution toward development of global infrastructure and human capacity are some of the measures needed to ensure highest standards of nuclear security in all countries, His Highness said.
Moreover, the UAE is fully prepared to support global efforts to combat nuclear terrorism. His Highness emphasized that the UAE works closely with the IAEA as active member of a number of international initiatives. He also expressed the UAE’s keen interest in forging close partnerships with all international organizations and bodies on a continuous basis and the country’s desire to back all initiatives aimed at bolstering capabilities to combat nuclear terrorism and preventing proliferation of WMDs. This, His Highness noted, reflects the UAE’s commitment, as part of its overall policy, to play a vital role in pushing international efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation, and to harness the resources to achieve international security and stability in harmony with the UAE’s plans to develop its peaceful nuclear programme in a transparent manner with the highest standards of security, safety and non-proliferation.
