The UAE is Number One Humanitarian Capital Worldwide

  • 10 April 2014

The statement made by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, that the UAE is the number one humanitarian capital worldwide, has highlighted some basic facts related to the UAE’s position on the international humanitarian map. It shows how the country has become a universal symbol of virtue which always extends a helping hand to the needy.

The UAE was named the world’s largest donor of official development assistance in 2013. According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), it went up from the 19th position in 2012 to reach the top last year. Preliminary data from the OECD shows that the UAE’s official development assistance amounted to $5.2 billion in 2013 while the country’s foreign aid was up by 375 percent from 2012.

The UAE has played a pioneering role when it comes to providing foreign aid – making it the biggest contributor to security and stability at the global level, which it regards as the greatest challenge. It also lends a helping hand to address problems related to development, especially in disputes and conflict-ridden areas, or those affected by natural disasters.

The most important feature of the UAE’s approach is its absolute faith in the importance of human solidarity, which is based on a rich heritage of humanitarian activities since the era of the late Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul). The human dimension has been fundamental to the UAE’s foreign policy and the eyes of the world turn to the UAE every time a region or people need help and support.

Moreover, the UAE provides its foreign aid as part of an effective institutional framework. It distributes material support through various organizations, which are marked by a high degree of efficiency and has a long, wide-ranging experience in development and humanitarian activities around the world. This makes the process viable and gives the recipient of aid the ability to cope up with difficult circumstances and challenges.

The UAE provides foreign aid impartially and detaches it from politics, race, religion or geographical considerations. The country provides help, assistance and support to all the needy, irrespective of their faith, race or geographical location. This lends further credibility to the international institutions operating in this field or among the recipients and beneficiaries of aid.

The UAE’ message to the whole world, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), is that the entire world is bound by a human destiny. The path to progress, peace and understanding in the world can only be achieved by strengthening the values of solidarity, cooperation and compassion among countries and peoples.
