The Solid Foundations of UAE–Saudi Relations

  • 18 February 2015

The recent visit of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia emphasized the fact that UAE–Saudi relations remain strong. This strength stems from the steadfast political will of both leaderships, which ensures the development and progress of the relationship. These relations are based on mutual understanding of the prevailing circumstances in the Gulf and the wider Arab region, as well as the inevitable need to deal with associated challenges based on a clear vision and unified stance.

After the death of King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud and the ascension of King Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz Al-Saud, Custodian of the two Holy Mosques (which entailed certain changes in government), extremists and terrorists had hoped for a setback in these relations, as the firm stance taken by both countries serves to curtail their activities. They began inventing rumors about both states, unaware of the fact that the relationship between them was immune to such desperate attempts at misinformation. UAE–Saudi relations have solid foundations and feature dedicated individuals who work for the welfare of both countries and peoples. These individuals are aware of the challenges facing both societies, and are committed to ensuring Arab and Gulf security.

Upon closer examination, His Highness’ visit to Riyadh will illustrate the fact that relations between the KSA and the UAE are of sufficient strength to eliminate these vengeful elements. They have become a model of collaboration and cooperation in the GCC. King Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz was keen to be among the first to receive His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan and the delegation accompanying him at King Khaled International Airport. The declarations of his Highness the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi outlined the UAE’s strategic vision of its relations with the Kingdom, as well as the latter’s vital role in the region. His Highness said, “The UAE, under the leadership of the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan (may God protect him) is keen to support and boost its special relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is a cornerstone of Gulf collaboration and integration.” He stated that the future of the Kingdom was assured under the leadership of the wise Custodian of the two Holy Mosques.

The dangers that threaten the Gulf region require greater collaboration and coordination than ever amongst Arab countries. This was the core message of the visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. It illustrated a profound awareness of the importance of supporting inter-Arab and Gulf relations, which provide the only means to fortify our region’s security.
