The ECSSR’s 6th Annual Education Conference – Education and Development: Towards a Modern Educational System in the United Arab Emirates – held from 27-28 October, shows the important role the Center plays in scientific research at the domestic, regional and global levels. The large participation of officials, diplomats, experts, academics and specialists on educational issues from all over the world, and sizeable presence of journalists and media professionals, demonstrated how seriously they take the activities of the Center.

Since its inception, the ECSSR has consistently addressed vital issues critical for the future of the nation and those that help decision-makers. During the conference, another vital issue of developing education and its importance in building the future of the nation were addressed. The conference also focused on the relation between education and development and highlighted the successes achieved by various countries in this domain.

Participants of the conference reviewed many successful international experiences and how the UAE can benefit from them. For instance, the South Korean experience was seen as a model for educational reforms to produce science and engineering cadres that can achieve development in no more than a decade. The German experience also came up for discussion as a model for developing vocational education by setting up new standards, suitable curricula and collaboration with businesses. Discussions were also held on teachers training to turn them into models for their students.

The participants of the conference also highlighted efforts made by the ECSSR in promoting education. They underlined the need for annual conferences to study the different dimensions of education system. This would be the ideal opportunity to put forward new vision and build national strategies to reform educational system and move forward in building a knowledge-based society.

In his closing remarks, H.E. Dr. Jamal Sanad Al-Suwaidi, Director General of the ECSSR, reaffirmed that the efforts made by the Center in the field of research are part of the nation’s extensive development efforts. He said that the Center occupies a prestigious position owing to the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and President of the ECSSR (may God protect him). He said that the Center’s growing stature motivates it to make more efforts, contributing to the overall development efforts and achieving UAE Vision 2021, aimed at building a knowledge-based society.
