Supporting Iraq in its Struggle against Terrorism

  • 22 September 2014

The UAE has always taken a clear and firm position against terrorism of any kind and regularly supports regional and international efforts to combat terrorism. This was evident in the country’s condemnation of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (Daesh) and its heinous acts in Iraq and the entire region, which includes acts of sabotage and killing of unarmed innocent civilians without any moral or religious scruple. The statement given by UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during the recently-held ministerial meeting of the United Nations Security Council, illustrates the UAE’s consistent position in this regard.

In his statement, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said that ISIS is committing these crimes in the name of slogans that have nothing to do with religion or tradition. He stressed the UAE’s disapproval of violence and extremism and reiterated the country’s adherence to principles of tolerance and moderation. “From this platform, as an Arab Muslim, I would like to unreservedly condemn the terrorist ISIS organization,” he said. His Highness also called on all parties concerned to share this condemnation of millions of Muslims of the practices of this group.

The UAE has repeatedly extended its unstinted support in this battle against terrorism. The position, stated explicitly by UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the last ministerial meeting of the UN Security Council, is the same he voiced during the last NATO Summit in Wales. The UAE held the same position while championing Arab League decision no. 7861 during the meeting in Jeddah and when it took part in Iraq Peace and Security Conferenc in Paris.

The UAE understands that terrorists look for a politically, economically, and socially fragile region, which provide them with fertile ground. However, if Iraq is a safe haven for terrorism now it shall not remain so endlessly as terror may reach other countries and regions. The UAE realizes the importance of regional and international solutions based on treating the root causes of terrorism and not just symptoms. H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said that groups such as Daesh know no boundaries. “We have before our eyes a malignant phenomenon with dangerous dimensions threatening nations and countries outside the Arab and Islamic worlds,” he said emphasizing the need to strike the root cause of problem and addressing the long term goals.

The UAE has also supported the cause of stability and unity in Iraq. In his statement, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan renewed his support for the security, stability, and unity of Iraq. This was the main motive behind welcoming the formation of a new national unity government headed by Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi. This government must adopt a program, which denounces violence and sectarianism. This exemplifies the true spirit of citizenship following sectarian policies that have led to the ongoing conflicts Iraq and has created a divide which threatens to tear the country’s social fabric.
