Support for Yemen’s Stability: The UAE’s Enduring Priority

  • 13 May 2015

When the UAE became part of the Arab coalition for operation ‘Decisive Storm’ in Yemen in March, its aim was to bring peace and security to the country and end threats facing the region. Subsequently, when operation ‘Restoring Hope’ was declared in April, the UAE supported it as a roadmap for the future of Yemen. This roadmap carries several political, security, economic and humanitarian dimensions. This has been an important operation as far as resuming the political process in Yemen is concerned, in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution 2216. It is also important from the point of view of the Gulf Initiative, the outcome of comprehensive national dialog and protection of civilians, and in terms of sending relief assistance and medical aid to the affected areas. These steps will pave the way for international efforts to extend help, beginning with the announcement of a temporary truce on Tuesday to allow relief and humanitarian assistance.

Taking steps in this direction, President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces (may God protect him), have already issued directives for providing relief assistance to ease the humanitarian situation in Yemen. These directives are within the framework of operation ‘Restoring Hope’ and have been announced in coordination with coalition member countries to support the Relief Operations Centre in Riyadh. The UAE Air Force has already dropped food and medical aid relief material over Aden in response to the humanitarian needs of the people of Yemen.

The UAE’s efforts in Yemen are extremely significant not only because the country has responded to urgent humanitarian needs in Aden, but also because it is part of its comprehensive vision for the future of Yemen and its stability. International reports indicate that large segments of the population in the city face shortages of food, medicines and basic supplies. The UAE’s aim is to respond to the aspirations of the people of Yemen so that stability returns to the country. Only this way can Yemen be set on the path of balanced economic and social development, overcome the chaos and play its typical role in the Arab world.

The support for Yemen’s stability and its territorial integrity is an enduring priority for the UAE, which is aware of the country’s importance to Gulf security and its key role in addressing the threats facing countries of the region, especially with regards to extremism and terrorism. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him) highlighted this priority when he said that “our only option is to pass the Yemen test for the benefit of the cradle of Arabism and the region”. This reflects the UAE’s persistence in support of Yemen and helping it overcome the challenges.

The UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), always stands for the interest of the Arab people and their aspirations for development, security, stability and progress. This has been the key driver of the country’s policies toward the Arab world since the era of Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul). Wherever a crisis arises in any part of the Arab world, the UAE makes all efforts possible to find a solution. Such an approach has enhanced the country’s image as a force for security, stability, peace and development in the Arab world.
