Strong UAE Support for Yemen

  • 27 September 2010

Speaking at a ministerial meeting of the Friends of Yemen group, held in New York recently, Foreign Affairs Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said that the UAE’s support of Yemen is based on an essential component of its foreign policy besides being the need of the hour and a well thought out strategy. He said that there is a need to stand in support of Yemen and help mobilize support to counter the challenges the country faces and that the UAE is keen to continue its support to the government of Yemen in this regard.

This support for Yemen is due to several factors. Yemen is an Arab country and the UAE is always keen to offer all possible assistance to the development of the region at various levels. This approach has been part of the country’s foreign policy since its inception and highlights its position of standing side-by-side the Arab world on political and economic issues. Secondly, Yemen is an important country because it is directly linked to the security and stability of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and lends a strategic depth to the region. During the Friends of Yemen meeting, GCC Secretary-General Abdul Rahman Al Attiya, said: “Yemen enjoys great importance in the perspective of the Gulf Cooperation Council and GCC has allocated resources amounting to $7.3 billion to support the development process during since 2007.”

Also noteworthy is the fact that Yemen is facing enormous challenges on the security and development front and needs external support to tackle them. This has been acknowledged by the international community in recent times and the UAE was among the first countries to support Yemen on various fronts. The UAE’s support for Yemen falls within the ambit of the country’s determination to collectively achieve regional stability and to offer full assistance to countries that are at the forefront of this conflict. Yemen is battling Al Qaeda’s efforts to set up its base in its territories so that it could threaten the security and stability of other neighboring and non-neighboring countries.

The same reason has been applied in relation to the support for Pakistan and Afghanistan as they are both at the forefront of the war on terrorism and support extended to them is essential in the interest of regional and international security. Another major consideration in this regard is that the UAE is keen to get involved in any international initiative against these challenges facing the world or within the region. The country has been proactive in responding to the initiative that are deemed necessary to make the world a more secure, stable and developed place. The UAE’s position in this domain has been admired and appreciated in regional and international arenas.
