Strong Foundations of UAE-Lebanese Relations
- 15 October 2009
The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during his meeting with Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri the day before yesterday clearly expressed UAE’s support for Lebanon, thus putting to rest all recent misapprehensions on relations between the UAE and Lebanon. During the meeting, His Highness stressed two essential points: First, the UAE is always intent on supporting Lebanon and contributing by all possible means for its welfare and stability. His Highness affirmed that this is a constant position of the UAE’s policy, in which not even the slightest discrepancy or variance is allowed. The second issue pertaining to UAE’s policy on illegal residents relates to the country’s laws and regulations which it exercises as a sovereign right and its obligatory actions and decisions in this regard brook no discrimination on the basis of nationality, creed or sect, as it respects all residents living on its land, and values their positive efforts and contribution, regardless of the diverse origins and affiliations of the peoples.
For his part, Lebanese Parliament Speaker spoke of Lebanon’s appreciation of the significant contribution made by the UAE for the benefit and development of Lebanese people throughout the different stages of Lebanese history and the acclamation of thousands of Lebanese who recognize and affirm that to them the UAE is like their second country. This statement reflects the true stance of Lebanon towards the UAE and the kind of appreciation and respect it accords to the Emirates, which is entirely different from those who seek to cause discord and tensions. In fact, the statements of Lebanon's parliamentary speaker followed similar observations made by Lebanese Prime Minister-designate, Saad al-Hariri, during his meeting with a delegation of the Emirates-Lebanese Friendship Association a few days ago, where he said that since its inception, the UAE has stood by Lebanon, its government and its people. Lebanese people of all sects and regions always remember the financial and moral support extended by the UAE government during difficult times.
The UAE, a country that is open to all that live on its land in peace and harmony, and which is place where scores of languages, religions and cultures intermingle, does not discriminate against any people of any particular religion or race, because this is contrary to its political constants and its ideal of civilization, which it has observed since its inception. It values the efforts of its residents and at the same time practices its sovereignty over its land in order to preserve its national interests without resorting to discrimination. The assurances of the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Speaker of the Lebanese parliament put an end to the surfeit of allegations, lies and exaggerations that surfaced in the recent past, and deal an effective blow to all attempts at undermining relations between the UAE and Lebanon, and testify to the strong foundations of relations between the two countries, which makes it immune from any slander and abuse.
