Strong Fortress for the UAE

  • 1 August 2013

Support for the UAE Armed Forces has always been a top priority for the UAE’s wise leadership. This fact was reiterated by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, during his visit to the Shooting Support Unit headquarters in Abu Dhabi recently. His Highness praised the support given by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, (may God protect him) to the Armed Forces in performing the supreme mission of defending the homeland and its achievements.

Our wise leadership has left no stone unturned in upgrading the Armed Forces and in raising their efficiency in terms of training, weapons and joint military exercises with Arab and friendly countries. This support has enhanced their preparedness to defend the borders against any external threat or malicious attempt to undermine national sovereignty. Our wise leadership realizes that the Armed Forces are the defenders of the nation and are a symbol of patriotism, loyalty and sacrifice. They also provide a protective shield to the progress made by the country.

This explains the reason why the founding fathers of the UAE – notably Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul) – took interest in unifying the Armed Forces – a target which was attained on 6 May 1976. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, emphasized this in a speech marking the 37th anniversary of the Unification of the Armed Forces, which he called as the second toughest challenge, after the Union, which was successfully achieved by our founding fathers.

The willingness of the UAE’s wise leadership to build professional and strong Armed Forces is based on a firm belief that military power is essential to maintaining peace, stability and security and that weakness invites aggression. The UAE’s Armed Forces have proved time and again that they stand for regional and international stability. They have also stood up in the past in support of justice (as was the case during the war to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi invasion) and helped in tackling riots in Bahrain in the year 2011.

The UAE’s Armed Forces embody the spirit of collective security within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). They have also been part of several peacekeeping missions in various parts of the world. Contributions such as these have earned the UAE Armed Forces global recognition not only in terms of professional performance, but also for displaying genuine values that are cherished by the UAE and Arab countries in general.
