Strengthening the UAE’s Status at a Global Stage

  • 13 June 2013

Mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence, openness to the outside world and looking at globalism as an opportunity rather than a threat are all constituents of the steady approach the UAE has pursued with the outside world over the years. The country has not held itself back in any domain – be it economic, political, social or cultural – and has been driven solely by the supreme interest of the nation. It is owing to these factors that the UAE lays emphasis on its Vision 2021 as the means to boost the country’s position across the globe and strengthen its pivotal regional and international role as a business hub that could serve as a link with the outside world. Its efforts to become a model of openness to the outside world have hence been a sweeping success.

According to an International Institute for Administrative Development (IIAD) report, the UAE was ranked 4th globally and 1st in the Middle East and North Africa on the criteria of “Openness to the Outside World and Positive Utilization of Globalism”, outpacing many advanced countries such as the United States, Britain, Australia, Norway and Japan. This outstanding achievement has been made possible because of the UAE managing to create a modern, self-sustaining economy capable of competing with the outside world. The World Competitiveness Center (WCC) Competitiveness Year Book for 2013 is another case in point. The UAE’s economy was ranked 8th globally on World Competitiveness Index (WCI), moving up eight places since 2012 and beating advanced nations such as Germany, Denmark, Luxembourg, Malaysia, United Kingdom and South Korea.

These positive results are consistent with the objectives outlined by the UAE Vision 2021 and has come as a result of the relentless efforts made by the UAE since its inception in 1971 under the leadership of Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul) and pursued in the Empowerment Phase under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him). These results justify the UAE’s approach of pursuing openness with the outside world in economic and trade matters without resorting to protectionist measures as has been done by some countries. The UAE has reposed faith in the potential of the country’s economy to catch up with the latest international developments and gain from the experience. This confidence has made the UAE economy capable of handling any crisis in the future and becoming a leading contributor to global economic recovery.
