Strengthening the Role of Gulf Cooperation Council
- 1 September 2014
People of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in particular, and Arab world in general, have great aspirations to fulfill resolutions of the last session of GCC Ministerial Council meeting, which concluded in Jeddah on Saturday. They look at it with a measure of optimism and confidence as a way forward that would boost fraternal, historic relations and common destiny of these people. They believe that this will reenergize the vital, national and regional role of this Arab Gulf entity. Since its establishment in 1981, the GCC experience has demonstrated the strength of this structure and its approach toward security, unity among its people and progress, and supporting the nation in facing challenges while guarding against terrorism and other attempts to sow seeds of conflict.
The communiqué following the conclusion of the GCC Ministerial Council session – chaired by His Excellency Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the State of Kuwait – highlighted the common destiny of GCC countries in the face of the dangers facing their security and stability. It said that attempts are being made to subvert the political, economic, social and security gains made by the people of the GCC, highlighting the scourge of terrorism in all its forms under the guise of religion. These groups are targeting and ruining the minds, human spirit and principles of true faith as well as misleading people of the region. Terror groups create an environment of chaos and ruin, which breed crime and lead to bloodshed of children, women and the elderly. Unfortunately, this is what is happening in many Arab countries and the world today.
Our wise leadership has never overlooked the importance of GCC in the face of these challenges. This has been evident in words of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him) on several occasions. He has maintained that there are ties binding people of the Gulf and that cooperation among Gulf countries should be formed on this basis. “We spare no effort in furthering the links between people of the region,” His Highness said. This interest is due to the importance that is given to building a compact security system that protects all sections of the society. On another occasion, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan said that since ensuring security is the first step toward stability and protecting the nation’s achievements, GCC countries have taken serious collective steps in this direction.
One cannot expect sustainable development as a model for the rest of the world if terrorists are allowed to go scot free and continuously serve their sinister designs to destroy the unity of the people, the nation and its future alongside the progress, well-being and dignity of the people. Here is hoping that the GCC would assume the role wished by the Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul), when he said that GCC is the mainstay of securing the strength of the countries in the region so that they can play their role in the service of Arab and Islamic nation and contribute toward the maintenance of peace and security all over the world.
