Smart Government in the UAE
- 5 June 2013
The Committee to Activate Smart Government Initiative – launched recently by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai – has begun discussing ways to implement and achieve its objectives. The Initiative, which is a creative way of communicating with the public, takes advantage of the spread of cellular phones and smart devices to help government agencies reach out to the people through technology.
The Initiative is consistent with the policies of the UAE’s wise leadership, under President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), of making the UAE an electronically-developed nation that thrives on the use of technology. It is a significant step, in theory and practice, to upgrade a digital network across the nation and optimize the use of technology to enhance government performance.
The Smart Government Initiative is based on unparalleled innovation and efforts to catch up with the rapid progress being made all over the world, which has transformed production-based economies to digital information-based ones. It arises out of a firm conviction that technology is crucial to determining the future of global economies.
The launch of the Smart Government Initiative is a source of pride for the UAE nationals and residents. It is meant to provide high-quality service in the easiest possible manner and intends to secure interaction with the public in order to improve the quality of life and achieve welfare by using time-saving technologies.
The Government’s willingness to accommodate and localize digital skills will make it possible for national cadres to take up opportunities in knowledge-based sectors. The Government has made relentless efforts to create and train a younger generation capable of handling modern technology using smartness and creativity rather than imitation and copying.
The announcement of the Smart Government Initiative also fills the digital divide that exists in many countries of the region. The UAE has come a long way in building a knowledge-based community. This Initiative is a giant step that would make the UAE a pioneering nation in using digitalized information in order to create the ‘Government of the Future’ to achieve prosperity by raising work efficiency at government offices and streamlining public services.
