Smart Government: A New Accomplishment for the UAE

  • 25 May 2013

Under the directives of the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him) His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has launched the Smart Government Initiative. The initiative is another giant e-government step whereby government services will be delivered via mobile phones and other advanced tools, round the clock easily and in a transparent manner. This is consistent with the Federal government’s policy of enhancing the quality of life of UAE citizens and residents, in line with the UAE’s Vision 2021.

This is yet another step of the federal government toward transforming and improving its e-government services by enhancing the internet network and communications into smart technology. This not only saves financial expenses of customers and enhances the effectiveness of administrative work but also improves competitiveness among government institutions. The process has considerably improved the performance of various departments and enhanced its administrative practices. As a result of this initiative, services on smart phones will be made available to a large number of investors and other users, besides facilitating flow of information to decision-makers.

The UAE’s wise leadership considers Smart Government as an urgent need to cope up with the current development in communications technology and its application in government practices. Application of the Smart Government system is expected to save AED11.9 billion every year and 30-40 percent of work hours. This, in turn, will increase workers’ productivity and enable citizens to become aware of the technological advancements taking place around the world. The UAE’s shift toward Smart Government will lead to a qualitative change in administrative practices and push for more innovation and transparency in government’s institutions.

Most of the objectives of Smart Government focus on the welfare of citizens and give them the option to submit requests for government services by using communications technology from wherever they are without having to wait. It also promotes financial and economic activities at the national, regional and global levels. Implementation of Smart Government is an opportunity for the merger of several government practices so as to make it economically viable. It will also expand its business network in tourist, investment and economic sectors with the outside world.
