  • 30 July 2013

The anniversary of the passing away of Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul), is a reminder of his remarkable achievements, which has become part of the annals of history for generations to follow. He may have passed away but his soul, wisdom, mercy and human affection remains etched in our memories. His benevolence extended to Muslim and non-Muslim countries alike. He built cities, hospitals, schools, universities, orphanages, helped underprivileged communities and started programs for mothers and children.

The Late Sheikh Zayed has a number of achievements to his credit which became possible due to his sheer perseverance. From his appointment as the Ruler’s Representative in Al Ain, Eastern Province, to his tenure as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and subsequent election as President of the UAE, he used his farsighted vision, affection and determination to forge the UAE Federation on 2 December 1971. This unique experiment has become a model of dedication, faith, patience and philanthropy for the coming generations.

Throughout his tenure, the Late Sheikh Zayed worked to develop human resources and the community. He always said that the Emirati is the most important element of progress and the most precious treasure for this country, a vision that came true. The late Sheikh Zayed dedicated himself to the service of his country and his people and their aspirations for a decent living. He led the epic march of progress until the UAE was ranked 4th globally in terms of per capita GDP, which according to IMF estimates, amounted to $50,000 thus beating a European country as rich as Switzerland.

The Late Sheikh Zayed established the foundations of justice and fairness in the country. “Our goal in life is to administer justice and support the weak and vulnerable against the strong and the powerful”, he once said adding that Islam is a religion for democracy and justice. He established Shoura council and regularly visited work sites of citizens across the UAE. He had deep respect for the elderly and compassion for the youth and earned everybody’s love and affection.

The Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul), has left behind a model, a spirit and a set of values that continues to dominate the UAE. He had a strong fighter’s spirit and believed that “the fruit is always there for the hopeful men to grab”. He also believed that science is a fortune and that we must build our future on a scientific temperament. He always reiterated that a true leader considers his people as his own family and that all barriers should, and indeed must, be eliminated between the ruler and his people.
