Seriousness of Israeli Moves in Jerusalem

  • 8 November 2014

Violence perpetrated by Israel in Jerusalem has escalated during the last few days and so have the violations of Al-Aqsa mosque, one of the most holy places in Islam. These acts have angered Islamic countries in general and Palestinian territories in particular. The UAE has always warned against interference in sacred places or bids to control them as such acts pose threat to regional and international peace, security and stability. This can cause religious strife which has already brought suffering and destruction to the world.

The UAE delivered a very clear message during Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s meeting with ambassadors of the Security Council member countries in Abu Dhabi recently. His Highness maintained that Israeli violence in Jerusalem must end and that everyone must work to achieve this goal. “The UAE is part of the international coalition against terrorism and extremism in the world. However, the killing and displacement by Israel is making our mission of creating a safe zone very tough,” he added.

Israel’s intransigence in Jerusalem spreads tension and builds an environment that could be used by extremists to further their agenda and achieve their objective of aborting any efforts to ensure peace, stability, and development in the region. Such violence also makes it difficult for moderate countries calling for dialog and openness between different faiths, civilizations, and cultures. This is why Israel’s violations of the sanctity of Al-Aqsa mosque do not serve interests of both the parties.

There’s no doubt that Israel’s acts of violence in Al-Aqsa are part of its general policy of Judaization of the city. It is seeking to impose status quo and changing its demographic nature by imposing settlements despite Arab and international opposition. If it continues to pursue this policy it would mar the prospects of peace and lead to more destruction not only in the Middle East but also around the world, going by Jerusalem’s significant religious and spiritual significance for Muslims and Christians.

As long as Palestinians and Israelis stick to the course of peace the Middle East would remain a highly strategic region for the whole world and its suffering and instability will have repercussions all over. Hence, the only way out of this predicament is for the international community to put pressure on Israel to fulfill the requirements and prerequisites of peace.
