Research Centers and Public Policy
- 9 December 2014
There is a strong correlation between the output of studies and research centers and effective public policies that deal positively with the challenges and issues facing a society. This is because scholarly research is the biggest source of support for decision-making process at the political, economic and security levels. Developed countries hence rely on research centers and think-tanks in different areas and allocate large financial support for the role they play in expanding the options of decision makers and provide studies that deal with the present and the future.
This is why the conference being held on Wednesday under the title – The Role of Research Centers in Supporting Public Policy – is important. It is being organized by the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) under the patronage by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, President of the ECSSR. A group of leading researchers from different countries will take part in the conference.
The conference is significant because of several key factors. First, it covers various aspects related to the relationship between research centers and public policy or decision-making process in the Arab and world and beyond. Second, the conference offers global understanding of the role research centers play in supporting decision-making. This is an opportunity to learn about the different experiences in this regard, not only in Western countries but also in the Arab and other Middle Eastern countries.
Third, the conference devotes a full session to tackling challenges facing Arab research centers. This is very important considering the circumstances prevailing in the Arab region and the challenges they face at security, political, economic and social levels. These challenges require active role of Arab institutions working in the field of scientific research and strategic thinking, which are looked upon by Arab decision-makers as a platform for dialog, discussion and research enrichment for the present and the future.
The conference, being organized by the ECSSR to mark its 20th year of establishment, reflects the awareness of the support to decision-makers. Over the past two decades, the Center has made extraordinary efforts through its studies, research and publications on subjects such as economy, politics, security, environment, culture and sociology. The ECSSR has organized numerous conferences and symposia to deal with issues central to the UAE, Arab region and the world besides providing training to local research cadres in order to prepare them to actively participate in the national development process.
