Promoting the Values of Moderation
- 15 July 2013
It is common knowledge that spreading the moderate values of Islam in the Arab and Muslim world is extremely important, especially when they are being deliberately tarnished by some extremists and zealots. These malicious attempts have misled some segments of the Arab and Muslim youth and intellectuals. They shun dialog, reject different points of view and resort to violence. This outlook is opposed to basic human rights such as women’s right to education and equal opportunities. It also politicizes religion for worldly gains and interests.
The cultural activities organized by the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) during the holy month of Ramadan are guided by the humanitarian and spiritual values of Islam. It will promote greater interaction and dialog between prominent intellectuals and religious scholars on the importance of moderation in Islam and how to practice it in our daily lives. The activities will provide an opportunity for researchers to discuss these topics with experts and the public and reinforce the belief that only meaningful dialog can lead to moderation, which is the need of the hour.
Since the bid to politicize religion for personal gains has been exposed recently it has become the duty of those serving their communities to guard against extremist discourse and thwart vested interests not only during the holy month of Ramadan but at all times. The ultimate goal should always be to defend the future of our people and their right to social and economic prosperity, welfare, human rights, development and basic freedom. This is exemplified in the title of the ECSSR’s Ramadan lectures – ‘Awakening and Reform’ and ‘Moderation and Political Islam’.
The ECSSR’s Ramadan activities got underway yesterday with special sporting competition and events. Other activities during the holy month will take place at the Ramadan tent in the Center’s premises in Abu Dhabi. The aim of these activities is to strengthen the humanitarian, social and professional relations among ECSSR staff so as to foster conducive work environment that promotes dedication and loyalty. A considerable part of these activities focuses on events related to women in the UAE.
