Promoting Message of Moderation in the UAE

  • 20 March 2014

In the wake of the attempts made by certain extremist elements to distort the virtuous faith of Islam, for serving hidden agendas that run counter to the interests of the Arab and Islamic societies, some agencies and institutions are playing an important role in spreading religious awareness of the true faith, especially in the minds of the younger generations. The UAE General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (GAIAE) is one such institution, which shoulders this huge responsibility.

The GAIAE discharges its responsibilities keeping in mind the circumstances prevailing in the Arab and Islamic world today, which requires being vigilant and strengthening the institutions involved in religious affairs. The GAIAE’s mission involves enhancing religious awareness, building and maintaining mosques and memorization centers, managing Haj and Umra affairs and investing in Waqf (endowment) for the betterment of the society. While its vision is promoting social awareness and progress based on the tolerant teachings of Islam, it also recognizes the current realities and understands challenges for the future.

Through its efforts the GAIAE contributes toward promoting the values of moderation and tolerance. Under the leadership of the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may Allah protect him), the UAE makes efforts to raise awareness of these values in order to address extremism, fanaticism, terrorism and religious and sectarian strife, which threaten the security and stability of Arab and Muslim societies. Followers of the Friday sermons every week are aware of the positive values and teachings of peace that are propagated and things that benefit people and correspond to Islamic law are promoted. This comes from the belief that Islam is a progressive religion and promotes love and peace among people. It doesn’t preach violence and chaos as is the aim of some deviant elements.

Another important dimension of the GAIAE’s work is maintaining mosques so that they become symbols of peace and harmony in the UAE. This shows why the wise leadership is concerned about constructing mosques and doing everything possible to enhance people’s role in the society. GAIAE’s association with the mosques is not confined to advanced infrastructure but extends to turning them into educational institutions through the process of memorization of the Holy Quran, dissemination of Islamic culture, publications, competitions and religious seminars. This is besides the task of training imams and preachers who can disseminate the correct message of Islam.

The GAIAE plays an important role in organizing the Haj and Umrah so that a cultured image of the UAE is presented in every Haj season. This also strengthens the development role played by Waqf because it offers informed religious interpretations through its ‘Fatwa Management’ and other tasks and responsibilities that focus on offering the correct image of Islam in its tolerant and pristine form.
