Profound Diagnosis of the Challenges Facing the Islamic Nation

  • 23 January 2011

In his speech at the opening session of the Second Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Conference’s Parliamentary Union, held in Abu Dhabi recently, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE—delivered on his behalf by His Highness by H.H. Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa knowingly and profoundly identified the most serious challenges currently facing the Islamic world, and the effective ways to address such challenges, saying our Islamic nation is targeted by forces of evil and tyranny; through terrorism, intolerance, and sometimes by over-zealous religiosity.

Truly, extremism and intolerance and are diseases that produce terrorism, which in turn undermines the security and stability of societies, and threaten not only coexistence among varied sects and races, but also the unity of the homeland. Terrorism distorts the tolerant image of Islam in the international arena, and provides greater service to forces that are hostile to Islam and that aim at positioning Muslims in confrontation with the West and modern civilization. Therefore, facing such serious malady should be the greatest Islamic priority and that of every member of the Islamic world individually, as well as at the level of the Islamic action—through the Organization of Islamic Conference and its institutions.

The Organization Islamic Conference’s Parliamentary Union can play an active and essential role in dealing positively with various challenges facing the Islamic nation. This requires developing mechanisms and methods for the OIC’s Parliamentary Union to be able to fulfill its responsibilities.

His Highness, The President of the UAE stressed this fact in his statement, pointing out that we live in a world of interrelated interests and multiple cultures; and if we cannot develop our own methods, then we would fail to protect and defend our interests, and counter whoever seeks to undermine or attack them.

The statement directed by His Highness, the President, to the delegations of Islamic nations in their meeting in Abu Dhabi, doesn’t derive its importance just from its accurate diagnosis of the Islamic world’s problems, but also from it being a reflection of the civilizational vision held by the wise leadership of the UAE. This vision has turned into a reality in the UAE as tolerance is one of the state’s main features, and a leading model presented by the UAE in open-mindedness, interaction and innovative co-existence among different cultures, religions and races; that is away from any semblance of intolerance, extremism, and alienation of the ‘Other’. The UAE always calls for the renewal of religious discourse, activating it, and clearing it from certain imperfections that cause it harm and inhibits its effect. This helps enable the religious discourse to interact with variables and changes of the modern world on the one hand, and confront extremist ideology, that is considered the source of all evils, on the other. While the message of H.H. the President of the UAE has been addressed to the Organization of Islamic Conference’s Parliamentary Union, it’s addressed as well to all Islamic institutions, missions, and forces that wield an influence, make transformations and build strong fronts to face various threats and challenges.
