Outstanding Policies to Support Innovation

  • 27 December 2015

The UAE is known for adopting creativity and innovation as a path leading to progress and sustained growth. As this year approaches its end, we remember the directions of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, in November 2014 to announce 2015 as the year of innovation in the UAE. Then the Cabinet instructed all federal entities to make greater efforts, enhance their coordination and review government policies with the aim of creating an environment which encourages innovation and enables the UAE to rank among top countries in the world in this field.

His Highness Sheikh Khalifa stated that “announcing 2015 as the Year of Innovation comes to support federal government efforts, attract national skills, increase distinguished research, as well as boost efforts to build a national cadre who are able to lead our future in this field towards more progress, prosperity and innovation”. Indeed, the UAE has achieved much this year.

His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, adopted this year the Higher Science, Technology and Innovation Policy. This led to around a 100 national initiatives in the education sector, health, energy, transportation, space and water, foreseeing an investment of over AED 300 billion. This took shape alongside national policies on legislation, investment, technology, education and finance. Its goal is to build a vibrant knowledge economy away from dependence on oil revenues, especially considering developing countries are characterized by having economies which are highly dependent on knowledge, innovation and creativity.

Establishing innovation as a way of life requires leadership with a comprehensive future vision to create an environment which stimulates innovation among the youth, encourage schools and universities to adopt scientific methods in research, and push governmental and private institutions to find new ways to develop the economy. We see this in the keenness of our wise leadership, represented by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to support the youth, encourage innovation, and establish entities to nurture creativity.

This led to strategic national support of several industries such as aerospace research, aviation, pharmaceuticals, energy storage, solar energy, water desalination, nuclear energy, and robotics and genomics research. By adopting innovation in 2015, the UAE proved that knowledge is the main drive of sustainable development, an essential pillar of progress and prosperity, and a source of human resources-based wealth.
