Openness to the Media

  • 9 June 2013

The meeting of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai – with representatives of the UAE-based international media within the framework of Mohammed bin Rashid Media Council – reflects the UAE government’s interest and belief in the crucial role media plays in the community. Media, after all, mirrors the views and aspirations of the nation and serves as a link between various segments of the society on the one hand and international community on the other.

Since the beginning, the UAE has shown the willingness to offer members of the community fair and equal opportunity to act freely and has provided them the means necessary to perform their duties. As part of this approach, the UAE’s wise leadership pursues an open-minded and transparent method to deal with the mass media. The speech delivered on the occasion by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is a case in point in which he lauded the contribution made by the media as a powerful engine for the progress and prosperity of modern nations.

The UAE political leaders’ willingness to engage with the mass media not only highlights the level of transparency but also recognizes the media as a means to reflect their views to the outside world. It is a platform to engage with countries around the world and present a vivid picture of the UAE’s society to other communities. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum affirmed this when he described these meetings as “a bid to keep people in regular touch with the latest developments in various sectors”. Maintaining that he would not mind any attempt to reveal facts His Highness called on everyone to follow the highest standards of professionalism and do their best to ensure accuracy.

This constructive and an open-minded approach toward the mass media, as practiced by the UAE’s wise leadership, stands out as an overriding principle being applied by various government agencies and organizations at local and federal levels. Moreover, it has become part of the work culture for these agencies and organizations to consolidate positive and constructive engagement and cooperation with the mass media at various levels. This is consistent with the tolerant, open-minded policy that the UAE and its wise leadership have been following since the beginning.
