On The UAE’s Humanitarian Leadership

  • 9 May 2016

The UAE maintains a leading position among the countries that most support charity and humanitarian work worldwide. The UAE has been taking numerous relief initiatives in areas beset by crises and natural disasters in addition to humanitarian and charity actions. Through its unwavering engagement to providing humanitarian assistance and relief, the UAE under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan- may god protect him- remains faithful to its values and its commitment to support all initiatives aiming at alleviating the suffering of people in distress in areas plagued by wars and conflict. In this regards, the celebration of the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day on May 8 represents an opportunity to recall the efforts undertaken by the UAE in support of development in vulnerable areas as well as its direct aid deliveries benefiting, inter alia, the displaced and refugees throughout the globe.

In view of the contributions to promote humanitarian work, the UAE ranked third in terms of the percentage of aid in its GDP. The country was listed by the OECD among the ten countries providing most development aid contributions globally. This ranking spurs humanitarian workers and officials in the UAE to further bolster their efforts to maintain such leading positions.

In remarks on this occasion, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and President of the Emirates Red Crescent said: “in several countries, humanitarian developments propelled by surging events and conflicts with repercussions on civilians and innocent people, including women and children, put our organization and relief bodies in front of a daunting challenge requiring a firm stand in addition to steady and collective efforts with a view to providing a better life to the affected populations.”

The celebration of the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is thus an opportunity for the UAE to further advance its efforts and vital contributions in support of the victims of violence, war and conflicts across the globe. This was evidenced by the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and his spouse, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, who visited the UNHCR's Harmony Refugee Centre in Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur to show solidarity with the refugees worldwide and to make a call for more action to bring assistance to them in terms of shelter, food, health and education on the basis of the principle of solidarity and empathy with other human beings whatever their religion, race or nationality.

The humanitarian efforts led by the UAE, which are manifested in institutional and individual initiatives, are not limited to a single area or arena. The UAE aid is sent all over the world in different field to people in need. This bright example of human solidarity shows that the UAE remains faithful to the path set by late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan- may god bless his soul.
