March To Conquer the Space

  • 8 September 2014

The federal law establishing the UAE Space Agency, issued by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him) recently, is set to complement a series of laws and achievements made by the country. The decision will expedite work and begin the process of implementation of the country’s strategy toward Vision 2021. It will also gradually fulfill the hope that all of us in the community aspire for, which is the development of a knowledge-based society.

A careful analysis of the decree – which includes federal law of the UAE Space Agency and its associated articles – shows the importance our leadership attaches to this major historic project in a manner that is devoid of any bureaucratic or complex administrative procedures that may hinder the objectives of the Agency. The directives issued by the UAE’s wise leadership are clear in terms of the need to speed up work on any such project and overcome any potential challenge that may lie ahead.

The federal law establishes the UAE Space Agency as an independent legal entity and links it to the cabinet directly, with full financial and administrative independence and the capacity required for conducting business and procedures. This will ensure that the agency achieves its objectives in sync with those of the UAE, which is keen to occupy top rankings at an accelerated pace. This has been evident in global competitiveness reports, human development reports, and other regional and international achievements of the UAE.

The UAE Space Agency will help expedite efforts to develop and use space technology in the country and undertaking of scientific research in space technology besides strengthening its position in the fields of scientific research. The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), emphasized its significance when he announced the process to initiate implementation of a UAE program to send the first Gulf, Arab and Islamic probe to Mars in 2021.

The UAE has embarked on a journey to become a knowledge-based society and has entered a domain mastered by only nine developed countries, with programs to explore the Red Planet. The UAE Space Agency will provide a new dimension to the diversification of the nation’s economy, enhance empowerment of citizens and equip the nation of one of the most complex sciences in the contemporary world as well as space technology. It will also create expertise as per best safety standards and regulations relating to space sector and its multiple uses.

The federal law comes at a time when the country is making significant strides toward sustainable development, infrastructure development and technological advancement. The UAE’s wise leadership relies on human resources and considers it the most dynamic element of human development, innovation, knowledge and creativity, which furthers the objectives of sustainable living and achieving the UAE’s Strategic Vision 2021. Nationals and residents of the UAE have another reason to be proud of this historic achievement as it is not only for the country, but also for the Arab and Muslim worlds.
