The UAE’s judicial system has been a top priority for our wise leadership. Founder of the UAE, the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul), once said that it was his habit to follow up on judgments to ensure that justice is done, that people feel secure, and that public property is safeguarded. The same policy has been pursued by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), who recently addressed judges and said that Allah, the law and their conscience are above their authority.
The Federal Supreme Court’s final verdict in the ‘secret organization’ case has brought closure to a tense period that had become a source of concern to well wishers of the UAE. No one had ever imagined an Emirati being involved in a conspiracy to undermine peace, security and stability of our beloved country, which is a pioneer in various spheres. The UAE judges exercised authority and delivered a judgment, ignoring those that desperately tried, in vain, to raise doubts over independence, integrity and transparency of the country’s judicial system.
This fact was endorsed by a UN body, which recently described the UAE’s judicial system as strong and one which delivers justice without discrimination. The Federal Supreme Court deserves the credit for adhering to the highest legal standards. It gave due opportunity to all defendants and lawyers and was even lenient enough to allow defendants’ relatives into the court room to witness proceedings. The Court was keen to take all steps possible for the convenience of defendants and the audience.
It also allowed local media to attend the trial, which helped a lot in explaining merits of the case to the public. This closed the doors on those who were casting aspersions on the proceedings, which were also made available to the local press. Before passing the judgment, the court examined all the evidence collected from various sources, listened to testimonies and studied affidavits filed by experts. This was another proof of the integrity of the UAE’s judicial system.
