Judiciary as the Citadel of Fairness and Equality
- 31 July 2013
The statement of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, made during his recent meeting with high ranking officials of the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Federal Judicial Council, judges of the Supreme Courts and members of the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution, enunciates the vision of our wise leadership and the role justice plays in the UAE’s development plans. His Highness said that justice was a means to achieve social security and stability and to enable the community perform its role in comprehensive development. He referred to the willingness of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him) in upholding the rule of law, supporting justice and promoting an independent judiciary.
From the very outset, the ‘secret organization’ case showed to the world that the UAE enjoys an independent, professional and competent judiciary that is capable of handling even the most sensitive and critical of cases with integrity and objectivity, in accordance with international standards. It also demonstrated that our wise leadership considers modern legal system as an important pillar in the building of a modern and stable nation. The decision of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (May God protect him) to offer medical treatment to a female defendant in the United States (in the ‘secret organization’ case) illustrates this point. The decision made a positive impression about our wise leadership throughout the world, especially in the judicial circles.
The greatness of the UAE cannot be undermined by dissenting voices — thanks to the country’s transparent, just and credible legal and judicial institutions. This was affirmed by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, because the UAE has always presented itself as an exemplary model in all fields, including the judiciary, which has earned for it global recognition and appreciation. The UAE tops the Arab and Middle East countries in the rule of law and transparent legal system index, and holds 13th place globally according to International Justice Program (IJP) in 2011.
Each time President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan meets with the judiciary, their main directive is always to administer justice and to be solely guided by their commitment to the rule of law. This has been a consistent policy of the UAE and its wise leadership, which was established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul), whose memory is cherished and respected by the whole world.
