International Appreciation of the UAE’s Humanitarian Approach

  • 12 November 2015

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Geneva appreciating the UAE’s role in supporting Yemenis affected by cyclone Chapala, which has hit the country in the past few days, is an important acknowledgment of the country’s humanitarian approach. OCHA’s statement doesn’t only refer the UAE’s support for Yemen but for all countries and people that are at the receiving end of its aid and get the benefit of its humanitarian approach. The UAE’s public and civil institutions have taken numerous steps to help Yemeni people.

Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him), His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces (may God protect him), and follow-up by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, the country has sent four ships carrying thousands of tons of relief material for those affected by the cyclone. The UAE’s Red Crescent Authority has also distributed tens of thousands of tons of urgent relief aid.

The UAE has taken several humanitarian initiatives since the crisis broke out in Yemen. It has provided assistance by building air-bridge and a naval fleet carrying thousands of tons of food and medical aid, clothes and emergency relief equipment to the affected areas even during the ongoing conflict in the country. Such a generous approach is not confined to Yemen alone but goes out to the regions affected by wars, political conflict, natural disasters and other forms of crises. As a result, the UAE was ranked world’s largest donor of official development aid during 2014, relative to its national income, by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Index.

The UAE is keen to ensure that the relief material reach the needy regardless of gender, religion or race. It provides this aid without any precondition and without attaching any political interest. This has been appreciated by organizations around the world. The UN’s acknowledgement of the UAE’s response to crisis in Yemen reflects the sincere guidelines given by the country’s wise leadership and the faith in its established philosophy. All charitable organizations in the country have adopted this approach and it is followed by all segments of the society. This is evident in the overwhelming response citizens and residents give to relief humanitarian campaigns organized by the UAE. This shows the country’s human image and the policy it adopts towards people around the world.
