Inspirational Standing of the ‘Mother of the Nation’

  • 4 March 2015

The campaign led by Her Highness Mother of the Nation Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Al Nahyan, Chairwoman of General Women’s Union, Supreme Chairperson of Family Development Foundation and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, for women empowerment, and the various stages it has passed through, is indeed a lesson for regional and international organizations working in this field.

The step taken recently by the UAE Women’s Federation is important in this context. It has launched a smartphone application on Android platform bearing a biography of the Mother of the Nation, her efforts toward empowering the Emirati woman across different areas of nation development. The biography also includes the more than 500 awards that Her Highness has won and the medals and certificates received from the UN as well as regional institutions, Arab countries, and beyond, besides Emirati awards and testimonies.

Her Highness has been a pioneer in humanitarian efforts in the UAE and Arab world as well as on the international stage. She has set landmarks in women empowerment, which makes her biography an inspiration for women around the world. It demonstrates strong will, a clear vision, absolute faith in women’s vital role in the society, and encourages them to succeed despite obstacles and challenges. She has undertaken organizational efforts which have transformed ideas into executable programs. This became evident in Her Highness’ early initiative to establish the first women assembly in Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi Society for the Awakening of Women) in 1973 and the UAE Women’s Federation in 1975.

The launch of the app this month, during which International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day are celebrated, makes it profoundly significant. Her Highness’ achievements have made her a model for the whole world, and have been acknowledged by international organizations. During its tenth convention in Beijing, the World Family Organization honored Her Highness while she received the Sustainable Leadership Icon award from Asian Business Leadership Forum on 12 December 2014. She was also chosen by Forbes Middle East as the Personality of the Year in the Arab world in 2014. Moreover, the World Economic Forum in 2014 ranked the UAE at the top internationally for treating women with respect.
