Undoubtedly, the honor conferred by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to members of the UAE wheelchair athletics team for their achievement at the World Junior Athletics Championships (IWAS) held recently in the Swiss city Nottwil, bears great significance and important implications.

For one, the conferment of the honor comes from His Highness’ keenness to intensify the values of achievement, excellence and dedication in all areas. The official high-level ceremony points to a major facet of our leadership, which does not miss any opportunity in honoring the outstanding personalities belonging to any important sport, especially those who hoist the flag of the UAE sky high. Such honor has a positive impact in encouraging others. Secondly, the gesture signifies that the attention given by the State to the people with special needs, and its keenness to bring them into the mainstream of society. The words of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan reflect the depth of his appreciation for UAE nationals with special needs, when he said that the will of the country’s youth with special needs and their determination has played an important role in this great sporting achievement. This clearly means that the interest in this segment has been and is among the priorities of the State and its wise leadership, by realizing the active role that it could perform in the progress and renaissance that the State is making, being an integral member of a society that strongly looks to take advantage of all the components of its human resource. The third is the attention given by the state and the wise leadership to sports in general, to promote it throughout the country.

If winning of international competition is a significant indicator of progress in sport, then the achievement made by the delegation, “the UAE team for the disabled” at the “World Championship for Youth Athletics” is‬ an important sign in this regard. This achievement is considered an important step towards greater excellence and victory in more tournaments of the future. This will undoubtedly enhance the reputation of the UAE and its position in sports in general, which was emphasized by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan when he said that sports for the disabled has became a rehabilitation venture in our country, that contributes to the integration of the disabled with the rest of the community.

Sport has been accorded a high priority by the wise leadership, which is manifest in the scale of accomplishments achieved through the integration of sports infrastructure in line with latest international standards, as well as in development of other segments of the discipline that qualifies the UAE for hosting international and regional sporting competitions.
