Helping Refugees around the World
- 23 June 2013
The UAE has been one of the prominent countries supporting refugees, providing urgent aid and assistance and carrying out development projects to help alleviate the suffering of those affected all over the world. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority, reiterated this on the World Refugee Day, which was observed on June 20. His Highness said that the UAE will remain a pillar of strength for refugees battling inhospitable conditions, will try to alleviate their sufferings and defend their human dignity.
The UAE’s recent efforts in support of Syrian refugees and homeless are an example of this commitment. The country has tried its best to help Syrians in distress either at home or in neighboring countries. It cooperated with Jordan to set up Muraijeb Al Fuhoud, which presently is the best camp offering services to Syrian refugees. The UAE also joined hands to coordinate regional and international efforts to provide more support for Syrians living in neighboring countries. The country remains committed toward supporting refugees and homeless all over the world because of its commitment to certain values.
Extending help to refugees and the needy has been a significant part of the UAE’s international humanitarian approach. The country always takes the lead in alleviating the suffering of people affected by conflict, war and disasters and tries its best to contain their problems. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan warned against the Syrian crisis dragging for too long because it means more and more refugees moving to neighboring countries.
The deteriorating crisis in Syria, which threatens to undermine international peace and security, has become a major challenge for the international community and NGOs. The UAE asserts that it is absolutely essential to bring this conflict to an end so that the ensuing consequences are contained. This also explains His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s call for world’s attention to this pressing issue, a coordinated international response and stronger engagement between humanitarian organizations to improve the conditions of the refugees.
Support for the refugees does not stop with material assistance but extends to helping them settle in their homeland again. It would also need setting up of basic infrastructure and reconstruction projects, and paving the ground for their safe return. The UAE has made sincere efforts to tackle the problem and challenges of refugees. Its humanitarian efforts have earned appreciation and recognition of international organizations and have left a positive image of the UAE as a country with a big heart.
