Global Status of the Emirati Women
- 24 October 2015
The UAE’s experience in the development field has been appreciated at various international forums as it tells a tale of inspiration, success, and ambition. It shows that the will power of the people can transform vision and aspirations into real successes, regardless of the challenges faced. This has made the UAE a successful model in a number of global development indicators. Today, UAE nationals, both male and female, are integral part of this process and have influential presence in international forums.
Many events in the recent past highlight the distinctive status enjoyed by Emirati women. Thhey are a picture of confidence and enjoy influential presence in decision-making positions in international organizations. The United Nations choosing an Emirati woman, Ohood Al-Roumi, as first Arab member of the prestigious Global Entrepreneurship Council is its most recent example. The Council includes world’s leading entrepreneurs from various sectors. They are selected on the basis of their leadership and administrative skills and their interest in raising level of awareness on global humanitarian issues.
The selection of H.E. Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi, First Deputy Speaker of the Federal National Council, as the Head of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Group recently, highlights the prestigious status Emirati women enjoy at international forums. The speech she delivered at the UAE Parliamentary Division, as part of the IPU General Assembly, demonstrates their contribution to global strategic issues. She highlighted the UAE’s approach to terrorism and challenges that threaten global security. Her Excellency said that the UAE adopts a comprehensive vision of issues related to security and stability in the Arab region and that national security of each country is inseparable from common regional security. “The UAE and its friendly countries cannot remain silent in the face of a new reality based on violation of legality under the pressure of thugs and countries supporting global terrorism,” she said.
Emirati women would not have succeeded in occupying such prestigious positions without the support of the UAE’s wise leadership, which provides an exceptional environment for creativity and innovation. These leaders always give credit for their achievements to the support provided by the UAE under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (may God protect him). Leadership plays an effective role in the development process, drives the society towards a brighter future, to achieve the UAE Vision 2021, which aims to put the UAE among best countries in the world.
These achievements confirm that the UAE is determined to continue its march towards further progress not only in the field of women empowerment but towards moving forward on the path of balanced development – caring for men and women alike, taking into account the needs of generations. Such an approach balances quantitative economic growth with the need to protect the environment and natural resources, following a comprehensive and sustainable development without any risk in the future.
