Global Confidence in UAE Capabilities

  • 20 December 2009

The United Arab Emirates’ wise leadership, its pioneering model of development and its openness to different cultures and civilizations have helped it integrate with the world. The country has improved its standing on the world map because of its active role in the fields of policymaking, economy, sports and culture and has gained the confidence of various global institutions for its capability to organize major international events. This fact was highlighted by His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and President of ECSSR, during his meeting with Joseph Blatter, the President of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), on the occasion of the FIFA Club World Cup, UAE 2009, which ended yesterday. He asserted that such events reflect the confidence the world and the federation have in the UAE’s capability to successfully organize major international tournaments.

This ability is a result of several factors. The first is the UAE’s self confidence, its national workforce and the experience it has accumulated over the years on planning and developing facilities for the country’s greater involvement in major international events. Secondly, the country is aware that these events showcase its progress and advancements at different levels besides transforming its image across the world, be it in the East or West. The third factor is the significant Emirati ambition to succeed at a global level. The nation and its leadership believe in its potential and the political capital that help UAE make its presence felt at international forums in a manner that serves its interests and provides a respectable image of Islam and Arabs.

Perhaps UAE’s successful bid for the headquarters of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), despite intense competition, was a vote of confidence for the first country in the Arab and Middle East to host a major international organization. This reflects that there are no limits to the country’s ambitions, it capabilities and its willingness to undertake new projects. The fourth connotation is that the UAE is considered a significant partner on the regional and international arenas due to its wise leadership and moderate policies pursuing peace, development and cooperation among nations. It is this status that supports the country’s initiatives at a global platform and helps it achieve consensus. If the capability to plan and implement plays a major role in a nation attracting international events to its territories, the underlying basis for its success stems from political capital and the image that reflects wisdom, kindness and moderation.
