Fierce Attack on Islam … Why?

  • 20 April 2008

At a time when feelings of rage are running high across the Muslim world over the anti-Islam film Fitna, made by the extremist Dutch member of parliament Geert Wilders, a new insult to Islam and Muslims has come in the form of a book published by US publishers WND, entitled Why We left Islam: Former Muslims Speak Out. The book’s cover shows an imaginary and torn picture of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him), which clearly represents its vicious content. The publication of this book comes on the heels of the release of Fitna and the republication of “offensive caricatures” by Danish newspapers. Other similar acts are suggestive of an organized attack against Islam by forces with malicious intent that seek to set up the Muslim world against the West by creating fear in the West against Muslims, their religion and culture, thereby inhibiting dialogue and interaction between both sides. It is alarming to note that those who call for a confrontation target Muslim religious figures and symbols such as Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Holy Quran. This is a vicious attack on Muslim sentiments, an attempt to provoke vicious religious wars of the past and a bid to undermine global security and stability. For this reason, the whole world, through its different authorities and establishments, should confront these extremists who violate religious sanctities by abusing the concepts of freedom of expression and views to promote their nefarious and dangerous aims.

All those who seek to abuse Islam, its sanctities and values are taking advantage of the unawareness in the West of the essence of Islam and its sublime tenets. This general ignorance allows them to promote their deceit and lies. Therefore, the Islamic world should take steps in a scientific and organized way to inform the whole world about the reality of Islam through a variety of means available in this era of mass communication and globalization. In addition, it is also necessary to check the response to these abuses, because violent retaliatory actions would only reinforce the position of those who vilify Islam. Muslims should respond in a civilized manner against this pattern of abuse by adopting the ways of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and by following Islamic tenets that espouse polite discourse. In this way they would present the most appropriate response to the abuse and manifest the essence of the Islam which has been subjected to false accusations.
