Far-Sighted Vision on Regional and World Issues
- 29 September 2009
The speech of UAE’s Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, at the 64th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, confirmed the UAE’s constants and vision on regional and international issues. The stance taken by His Highness at this important international forum was a reflection of the profound principles followed by the state in its international relations. First, he emphasized the primacy of peaceful ways for resolving international disputes. In this respect, His Highness confirmed that the three UAE islands occupied by Iran (Abu Musa, Tunb Al-Kubra and Tunb Al-Sughra) are an integral part of the UAE territory, and called on the Iranian side to respond to the UAE’s peaceful calls that are supported regionally and internationally in order to achieve a just settlement of the case, either through serious bilateral negotiations or by referral of the case to the International Court of Justice. Second, ne stressed the withdrawal of Israel from Arab lands it occupied in 1967 as the road to achieving peace in the region. This confirms the UAE’s strong support for Arab and international references that underpin the peace process against Israel's attempts to evade or marginalize them. Third, the UAE rejects any interference in internal affairs, and respects and maintains the sovereignty of the states as a strong foundation for normal and positive relations between various countries. This is reaffirmed by His Highness the Foreign Minister’s statement on the necessity for the respect of Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and non-interference in its internal affairs. Fourth, HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan stressed the importance of supporting Pakistan's stability for providing strategic depth to the Gulf region, and for being an essential factor in maintaining security in the neighboring areas, particularly in Afghanistan.
